Survived the storm!

We have been getting more tomatoes! Lots of little husky cherry red tomatoes and a few romas too. And, it looks like a couple more big boy tomatoes are getting ready. They have been so sweet and juicy, and I'm excited for how many more are growing - around 40 more from what I can see right now. We made a caprese salad the other day, and it was delightful. I'd love to have enough bigger tomatoes to make a fresh pasta sauce, but we haven't had too many ripe at the same time yet, so we'll have to see.
We're pretty lucky that all of our tomato plants are still standing, considering the major derecho storm that rolled through on Monday evening. It tore through the midwest, destroying many trees, cars, and houses. Unfortunately, many friends have sustained a lot of damage, and my heart goes out to them. Our power went out for a few hours and the wind from the tornado was very intense, but only our zucchini plant seems to have felt the effects. It wasn't doing that great anyways - I was never able to find a female flower on it to pollinate it, so I'm not sure we would have been able to get any zucchini from it, but I tried replanting what's left of it.

Although I'm a little sad we've probably lost the zucchini plant, our acorn squash is finally growing female flowers! I pollinated them with the male flowers, which we have plenty of, so we'll see how they grow during the coming week. My Grandpa Watkins used to give me acorn squash before I knew what to do with it, and since then I've learned some great recipes. The garden is getting pretty full of peppers, tomatoes, and herbs. Even the mystery tomato plant has little tomatoes starting to grow on it, and we've got our first couple of strawberries flowering. It's looking like we will be having a fruitful fall!
