Mystery Volunteer

This week, we had more peppers from the garden - jalapeños, poblanos, and shishito peppers! Our green peppers are finally starting to grow as well. I wanted to eat our first jalapeño fresh, so Valeria made some pico de gallo (check out the recipe here) and we were surprised how much heat that little jalapeño had!

We also charred up the shishito peppers and made a little herb and lime oil with it, and they were amazing (check out the recipe here). We only had nine of them total, and I could definitely have gone for more. Hopefully we'll have a new batch of shishitos soon.

More of our husky cherry tomatoes are turning red, and some of the roma tomatoes are almost ready too. We were able to pick a San Marzano tomato, and we're letting it ripen a bit more on the counter before eating it. We haven't had that many tomatoes yet, but the ones we've eaten so far have all been juicy and delicious.

Valeria with a San Marzano and Husky Cherry Red Tomato

I was doing some reinforcement for the garden (fertilizing and adding bamboo support poles for the tomatoes), and I noticed that we have a volunteer tomato plant growing from the ground! Volunteer plants are what my mom calls it when a plant emerges without you planting it there. It could be from a seed from last year or this year. It's closest to the San Marzano tomato this year, but it's close to where my bonnie original tomatoes and sungold tomatoes were last year. Since it's close to the old bale I used from last year, I'm tempted to lean towards thinking it's from the sungold tomatoes that were planted in that bale. There are some yellow flowers on it, so I'm excited to see what it grows!
